Lying between Umhlanga and Ballito, and situated at the mouth of the Mdloti River, Umdloti is a small KwaZulu Natal, North Coast town nestled in a coastal conservancy surrounded by fields of sugar cane and indigenous forests. The town's name is derived from the Zulu word, 'Mdloti', which is a species of wild tobacco growing on the banks of the river which shares the same name.

Umdloti's main attraction for the North Coast holidaymaker are three beautiful beaches namely Newsel Beach, Selection Beach and Umdloti Beach. Umdloti Beach features a large and totally natural tidal pool, where swimming is safe for smaller children, and at low tide, a variety of ocean life can be seen in the rock pools. Because of its popularity, Umdloti Beach is shark netted and has lifeguards on duty, making it the ideal North Coast beach for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and diving.

Anglers choose Umdloti Beach, as it is known to be the best North Coast fishing spot for snoek and shad, although fishing is limited in certain areas.
Please note that collecting mussels from the rocks and cray fishing are restricted in Umdloti, and require a permit from KZN Nature Conservation Services.

Without a doubt, Umdloti Beach is best known for the 800 resident dolphins which frequent the shallow waters, a number that increases to over 15,000 during the annual sardine run. Humpback and Southern Right Whales are also plentiful during the calving season from July to November.
